The Thai capital, Bangkok, is a city full of fascinating temples and monuments. One of the most notable is the Wat Pho Temple, which dates back to the 18th century and is known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. For us, it was an incredible experience, full of history, architecture, and spirituality.
Located on the southern bank of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Pho is a complex of temples and shrines that houses numerous images of Buddha, including the famous reclining Buddha statue that measures 46 meters in length and 15 meters in height. The temple is one of the oldest and largest in the city, covering an area of more than 80,000 square meters.
The architecture of Wat Pho is a blend of Thai and Chinese styles. The temple is characterized by colorful multi-tiered roofs, carved columns, and intricate patterns in gold and blue. The Buddha statues inside the temple are beautifully ornamented, with intricate details and splendid gold decorations.
Wat Pho is a sacred place for Thais, so visitors are invited to respect the culture and spirituality of the place. Therefore, visitors should cover their shoulders and legs.
There are many smaller temples within the complex, each with its own history and significance. The temple garden is an incredible place to explore, with over a thousand Buddha statues, some over 200 years old. Each one has its own facial expression and posture, providing a unique glimpse into Thailand's rich cultural heritage.
In addition to its architectural beauty, Wat Pho is also an important spiritual and educational center in Thailand. The temple is considered a center for the study of traditional Thai medicine, where one can learn about ancient healing practices in Thailand.
We were fortunate enough to visit Wat Pho during the monks' prayer, an incredibly spiritual experience. We were fascinated by the way the monks conducted their prayers and meditations, and how it is a part of Thai culture and tradition
To get to Wat Pho, you can take a taxi, tuk-tuk, or use public transportation. The temple is located near the Grand Palace and is easily accessible. Wat Pho is open daily from 8am to 6pm and admission costs 100 Thai baht (about $2.9 USD).
